100th anniversary of Tomiki Sensei's birth

Congratulations on the centenary of Tomiki Sensei's birth.

There are so many memories of his life. After teaching at Waseda University, if he had free time, he used to come to Osaka and gave us aikido lessons

After he introduced me to his close friend Hidetaro Nishimura Sensei who was teaching judo in Kodokan and consulted another good friend Shohei Hamano Sensei, a dojo in Osaka was looking promising. He said that he would leave all the techniques that he had taught to Shodokan as his central dojo. That was the start of Shodokan.

At first, lessons were taught by Oba sensei, university club members and Kobayashi Sensei from Aikikai. Nariyama Sensei taught as well and was Kobayashi Sensei's apprentice for about six years after he graduated from university.

When Tomiki Sensei was in Osaka he stayed at our house and used the dojo. While eating meals and until he went to bed he just talked about aikido. He never tired of reminiscing about when he, as a university professor, was invited by General Hideki Tojo to teach aikido to the Kanto Army until the war ended. He kept a notebook and pen at his bedside so that he could write down new techniques if he woke during the night. I really thought he was like a god, thinking of aikido even when he was asleep.

The seeds Tomiki Sensei sowed have sprouted and blossomed throughout the world.

We sincerely hope this competitive aikido will continue to develop more and more.
